Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
A woman stabbed repeatedly to her neck area in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop within Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
Originally charged with attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated officers would be around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her work period around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues take public transport, take the tram... our security is compromised fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She doesn't drive employed at major concert locations... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's horrible."
