UN Ends Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

The UN Security Council voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the following week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of civil war.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

Previously, he faced global penalties in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the extremist organization. America delisted the group from its registry of global extremist entities during July.

More Penalties Removed

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for backing the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

After the meeting, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of Arab nations.

After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the US in the current year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the global assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
