The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.

“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
