For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the past of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

Like many elements of the final season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in the past.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
