Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team
England have opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
