The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
