Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Latest Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments following the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The team finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
