The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
