Domineering, Coercive, Expansionist: the Comeback of the Ugly American
For a long time, president after president has attempted to free the America of its reputation as a coercive, hegemonic nation. Yet with his boastful, frequently harsh actions toward other countries, Donald Trump has rapidly revived that notion. During his tenure, the Ugly American is back.
Forceful Exercise of Authority
He achieved this by wielding American influence in forceful and presumptuous ways – by criticizing international strategies and then promising to penalize them if they don’t bow to his requirements. He is engaging in exactly what international law declares heads of state ought to avoid. On multiple occasions interfered into other countries’ affairs, intimidating their representatives, criticizing their policies and ignoring their independence. Too often, he views other countries as dependents of the United States (and of his personal pride).
Roots of the "Unpleasant Image"
The phrase “the Ugly American” was popularized by a literary work published in 1958 with the same name; it described the lack of awareness and clumsiness of U.S. representatives who frequently couldn't communicate in the tongue where they were stationed and infrequently spoke to the locals there. As decades passed, that term was increasingly used to describe insensitive and overbearing US tourists and tactless and overbearing American approaches toward foreign countries.
Worldwide Interference
Trump has acted like an unpleasant image in numerous instances. He involved himself in Brazilian national issues by virtually commanding it to drop the prosecution of its rightwing previous head of state (and personal friend) the Brazilian ex-president for scheming to attempt a government overthrow to regain control. After Brazil refused the charges – Bolsonaro was convicted and sentenced to over two decades in jail – Trump imposed a significant import tax on products from Brazil.
In the past few weeks, he has acted as the Unpleasant, even Irrational, U.S. representative toward the northern neighbor when he became angry after viewing a television ad, sponsored by the region of the Canadian province, that featured segments of a Ronald Reagan address against tariffs. In retaliation, he enacted an additional 10% tariff on items from the northern neighbor. That move increased the displeasure of the people of Canada who were already furious about his ridiculous proposal to transform Canada into the new American territory.
Trump has also attempted to intimidate the South American nation. He declared the America would cut off aid to that country after its head of state, the Colombian president, protested that the American forces had targeted a Colombian fishing boat and killed a fisher as part of Trump’s campaign of striking ships accused of moving narcotics. Utilizing unpleasant, unprofessional discourse, he labeled the nation's leader an “drug trade figurehead”.
Defense Intimidation
Simultaneously emerge the administration's on-again, off-again intimidations to initiate armed attacks against the Latin American nation. They’re a reminder of Washington’s blatantly expansionist involvements in, including, the Indochina country, the small nation and the Middle Eastern state, with the 1953 coup ousting a leftist prime minster. The nation's leader, the Venezuelan leader, is dishonest, oppressive and dictatorial, and rigged a vote, but defense action would be a regression to the lowest points of unpleasant American policies.
European Bloc Affairs
Trump has also involved himself in the EU's matters. At a time when digital networks is saturated with so many untruths that it makes it hard for democratic governments to work, even endure, the European bloc has understandably required digital services to remove deceptions and other false narratives. But he has condemned the EU online rules, claiming that it shows bias toward US tech companies. The White House has frustrated the EU by promising to impose new tariffs and limit the travel documents of some EU officials.
His negative approach approaches have done serious injury to America's reputation overseas
Governmental Intervention
He has wrongly interfered in Argentinian governmental matters by stating he would grant a forty billion dollar rescue package, but may retract that money if the party of the nation's head of state, the Argentine president, lost parliamentary votes. “In case of his loss, we are will not be helpful with the country,” he stated. The faction succeeded, following meddling the U.S. leader claiming partial responsibility, stating: “He obtained significant support from the United States.”
The second-in-command, JD Vance, intervened in German politics by criticizing mainstream parties for establishing a “firewall” against allowing extreme conservative groups such as the Alternative for Germany into a ruling alliance. Through an oration in the past weeks to the Israeli parliament, he involved himself in the nation's governmental matters in an extraordinary way, calling on the head of state to forgive the head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu, on the legal accusations he’s facing.
United Nations Presentation
In Trump’s hour-long diatribe to the United Nations gathering in last fall, he tried to act as Global Leader. He directed the international community to jettison their climate change policies, saying concerns about climate change are {“the greatest con job
