Applause from Guardiola for ‘Street Footballer’ Cherki Ahead of Villarreal Match
Etihad chief Guardiola, previously guided greats like the Argentine maestro, Iniesta, and Xavi, has declared that Cherki ranks among the most gifted footballers he has ever witnessed and believes the youngster will embrace the team-first approach at the Manchester outfit.
Return from Injury
Cherki, who moved to the Sky Blues from Ligue 1 in a £30.5m deal in time for the Club World Cup in June, has managed just seven outings so far. After recovering from a thigh problem, he came on for a five-minute stint in the 2-0 victory versus Everton last matchday, in which he came close to assisting a third for Haaland.
Now, he has travelled to face Villarreal and could have his UCL debut in a City shirt.
Guardiola’s Insight
Despite asking for time, the manager was at a loss to fully describe the youngster’s qualities, noting that the only concern is how he adapts into the structure and gets used to executing simpler tasks effectively.
“Cherki is among the greatest stars I’ve come across throughout my coaching life,” Guardiola said, showing amazement. “On a technical level he is excellent. The key is how he settles and his perception of each situation, what each moment requires. He started in the intercontinental cup, though he was sidelined. It’s about taking it gradually, but his talent is clear: I feel that most of the time when the play reaches him, the attack becomes more dangerous.
“Not every time have to produce spectacular moves; sometimes he just needs keep it straightforward. Yet he possesses something unique. Like the pass for the striker late in the game, among many plays he executes.
“He is someone immune to stress in possession. He resembles a street footballer. He gets frustrated – ‘give me the ball’ – when he doesn’t get it, you know. It’s only been not long with us; it requires a bit because you must connect with teammates.”
Inquired if Cherki can integrate with the collective spirit, Guardiola responded: “Yes, definitely. These kinds of players are very intuitive, highly intelligent. They see everything.”
Recognition for González
The City manager additionally commended the midfielder, who is expected to play in the heart of the park. The team’s usual starter is present to his former club, where he is celebrated pre-kickoff at their stadium, but is out with a muscle problem.
The manager said: “I have the impression that González is progressing consistently. We’re really satisfied with his approach and he ought to develop further. He is cultured, receptive, a great character. His family should be extremely happy with the man and player he is. He must be himself, yet while competing with elite teammates, you continuously improve. You see how you can get better, however, González must be Nico, without a doubt.”
City’s Upward Trend
Guardiola also spoke glowingly on the club’s improving displays. “We put away many goals, generating lots of chances, and at the same time not conceding much. There have been only eight Premier League matches plus two in the Champions League, though I sense that every match improves upon the previous one and will be surpassed by the following.
“We talk about a lot how we can improve and methods to understand situations improve. I have great trust in the team and I realize the individuals are putting in the effort. We are displaying excellent condition.”
